Random Thoughts
At the moment I have so much going on in my head, I literally don’t have an off switch. I wish I did but I don’t, and I’m suffering for it too because most nights I’ll just lie there in bed and I’ll lose sleep from it. The only thing that elevates the pain is writing them down, so today I’m going to share some thoughts with you….
- So many gurus out there state that you shouldn’t train with music because ‘science’ shows:
1.) It affects your focus.
2.) It has no effect on energy or strength levels.
Then how come after a long day of training clients or whenever I’m in a real lethargic mood I chuck on Eminem’s new album recovery and bust out a kickass training session?
- The 2 most underrated exercises in the exercise dictionary are…

- I think the best fat loss method has nothing to do with training, diet, genes or hormones. It’s when you ‘get it’. What I mean by ‘get it’ is when…
- You get that cereal is a carb and it’s not healthy.
- You get that just because something is 99% fat free doesn’t mean it will help lose body fat.
- When women get that lifting heavy will not give you huge muscles and turn you into the hulk.
- When men get that just having protein powder with extra superdooperwickedbullshitsupplementsarethebiggestscamever won’t pack on slabs of muscle.
- Never understood why trainers are always correcting posture and are super OCD with it. Yet when the set is over they allow their clients form fall to the way side (shoulders shrugged, flat lower back, heels raised) when they put the weights down. This is where the risk of injury is at its greatest.
- “Cardio sucks!”
- Carb cycling is probably the most effective diet for fat loss. Especially if you are under 15% body fat.
-There is way too much confusion out there with science and reality. My advice is if you read or hear something and are not too sure if it’s true or not. Try it yourself and then you will know if it works.
- For a killer superset try pull ups with shoulder press.
- I believe 5-8 rep range is the best for fat loss, but don’t rule off everything else. I think it’s a good idea to train every rep range to get variety and different benefits. So maybe an effective training program could look something like this…
Set 1 – 4
Set 2 – 6
Set 3 – 8
And leave the high rep stuff to the finishers.
- About every fortnight the news builds up some weight loss formula and claims that this is the new discovery that vanishes 6kgs of fat into thin air in 7 days. Yet after the update you never hear about it ever again, weird huh?
- “You will get results when you train not ‘workout’”.
- It does my head in when people finish a set and then put the weights on the bench or seat. If you havn’t noticed dumbbells are usually round which means they can roll. Now I’m no scientist but if the weights roll off the bench and hits your foot I think it’s going to hurt. Use your ass (potentially one of the strongest muscles in your body) and deadlift the weights back down to the floor.
- “Pay your grocer or pay your doctor”.
- This particular car came out onto the market and from day 1 I wanted it. It was totally out of my price range but I didn’t care. I said to myself “one day I will own that car”. I saved, worked my butt off and sacrificed a lot and due to my unstoppable mindset of wanting this car I got it! (yesterday actually) The point of this story is that body transformations don’t just happen because you want it to . You have to work for it and really want it, and I mean REALLY want it and sacrifice late nights, alcohol, junk food, time and sooooooo many other things. The ones that want it bad enough will just do it, not ask why or say I can’t or start Monday. They just go out there and do it! That is the key to success.
- “It’s easy to criticise someone who takes risks”.
- I would like to let you know that I appreciate it when you put your trust in me to answer your questions you send via facebook or email. The thing is if all I did was answer everyone’s questions that’s all I would be doing all day. I value my time which is why I usually either don’t write back or reply really late, I hate doing this because it makes me feel snobby which is why I started the whole ‘Ask Grant’ thing. So remember to keep sending your questions through but I’m sorry you will have to wait for your answer every fortnight or so.
- People ask me why I do this blog and give away advice for free. Here’s why…The other week I was at a party and a person who I have never met before comes up to me and says “Hey you’re Grant Lofthouse, I love your blog and I follow your advice, keep up the good work”. This is what inspiries me to keep uploading new blog posts every week.
